Martina Navratilova won 18 singles majors, including 9 Wimbledons, and 59 major titles in all.
- 5
Chris Evert won 18 singles majors, including 7 French titles, reached 34 consecutive major semi-finals and won about 90 % of her career matches.
Why it works
Evert's mechanism was depth without error, from a two-handed backhand she made standard in the 1970s. It turns a rally into a test the opponent fails first. Navratilova's was the net behind a left-handed serve, backed by conditioning and a support team the women's game hadn't seen. She made the sport physical.
Graf's was footspeed that let her run around the backhand and hit a forehand from anywhere, inside-out or inside-in, with a slice to change pace. Serena's was the serve: power, placement and disguise that produced free points and a predictable reply for her first strike.
Read that way, the record is a lineage. Each champion set a standard, and the next inherited it. Counting mechanisms tells you more than counting trophies, because trophy counts also reflect era and format.
The line to say on court“Depth, net, forehand, serve. Four standards, in that order.”

Questions players ask
Who has the most Grand Slam titles in women's tennis?
Serena Williams holds the Open Era record with 23. Margaret Court won 24, but hers span both the amateur and Open eras, so the comparison depends on how you frame the eras.
Who has the most weeks at world No. 1 in women's tennis?
Steffi Graf, with 377 weeks, 186 of them in a row. Navratilova had 332 and Serena Williams 319.
What is a Golden Slam?
Winning all four majors and Olympic gold in the same year. Steffi Graf did it in 1988, and no one in either game has matched it.
What did Martina Navratilova change about women's tennis?
She built her game on the net behind a left-handed serve and backed it with conditioning and a support team. She made the women's game physical.
What this doesn't cover
Court's 24 against Serena's 23 depends on how you frame the eras, and isn't settled. Women's rating data is thinner before 2000. The mechanism for each champion comes from player profiles and still needs checking against film and data. Titles and weeks don't rank players across eras.
