Why it works
Federer solved time. He made contact early, on the rise, with a compact chain that cost little effort, so opponents had less time and he had more of it late in his career.
Nadal solved geometry. A left-handed forehand with extreme spin lands high on a right-hander's backhand, and on clay the bounce does the rest. Djokovic solved the serve. Take the return early and hit it deep, and the server's best weapon becomes a neutral rally he's favoured to win.
Each solution attacks the other two's strengths, which is why none of them ever settled it. All three share the same chain order through the forehand. The difference is where and when the ball is met, and the path of the racquet through it.
The line to say on court“Same engine. Three answers: earlier, heavier, deeper.”

Questions players ask
Who is the greatest of the Big Three?
It depends on the method. Djokovic leads on majors, 24 to 22 to 20, and on peak Elo by a single point over Federer. Eras, surfaces and matchups complicate any single verdict.
Was Nadal only a clay-court player?
No. He won the career Grand Slam, with majors on every surface. Clay was his peak, not his limit.
Why was Nadal's forehand so hard to play?
It was left-handed and heavily spun, at a median of about 3,200 rpm, so it landed high on a right-hander's backhand. On clay the bounce did the rest.
Why was Djokovic's return so effective?
He took it early and deep, so the server's planned +1 dissolved into a neutral rally he was favoured to win.
What this doesn't cover
Peak Elo depends on the rating method, and figures such as Djokovic's weeks at No. 1 keep moving, so date any number you quote. Head-to-head records aren't covered here. Major counts alone don't settle who was best.
